Book Review - Curses ~ AKA Curse of the Spider King

Curse of the Spider King is written by Wanye Thomas Batson and Christoper Hopper and is the first book of the series, The Berinfell Prophecies.
Mr. Batson has previous written the bestselling The Door Within Trilogy, as well as Isle of Swords and Isle of Fire, respectively, which are in the same series, but, to my knowledge, they lack a series tittle. (If someone can correct me about that I would gladly appreciate it.) Christoper Hopper has written The White Lion Chronicles, which include Rise of Dibor, The Lion Vire, and, soon Athera’s Dawn.

Summary:

*Taken from the back of the book*

Will Anyone Escape the wrath of the Spider King?
The Spider King's minions ate crossing from Allyra to Earth to hunt for seven unsuspecting thirteen-year-olds, who are royalty from a foreign world. Stopped once by an ancient curse, the dark forces are determined to finish the job. The Seven's only hope for survival is a remnant of exiled Elves intent on restoring their kingdom- but can they be trusted?

Navigating the tangled web of the Spider King, the teens must make a perilous choice: Go to Allyra and face an uncertain destiny; or remain on Earth and risk the lives of the ones they love.

PROS:
  • The Characters: Big assortment, you're going to at lest one that you like. Kiri Lee, Charlie (Merrick), Edward, and Travin, being the some of the few that I like.
  • Setting: Lovely, I just loved it.
  • Story: Seems like a good plot they have going on...
CONS:

But this book was too short for me to know for sure, I'll have to read Venom and Song, Book two in the series to see if it's any good, because the cliff hanger ending- which some could label not the best because of its sudden cut off. Venom and Song will that either redemn that end or put a curse on it.

I was hoping that since it was Christian Fantasy I was going to get more mentioning of Ellos (Human word would be God) and that the characters would reflect His goodness... That's why I pick up Christian Fiction of any kind, so that was a let down...

At one point I though they had lost Autumn and Johnny... (After all I had lost them as well!) They didn't, mind you, but spacing could have fixed that, or even just adding what happened to Nelly...

Overall:

Decent first book for the series, would have wanted it longer if not just get the heroes to the safe spot, that way we have the characters relax, and give them a chance to mention a thanks to Ellos, or to get the firm story (Like what they have to do to get rid of the Spider King), because I felt that Curse of the Spider King (CotSK) was just the set up to everything else, unfortunately. But there was nothing that I can see done to fix it other then make the book longer which, with its intended audience, would have been a badish thing. (I mean I would like it, so it's only an ish. ;) )
Venom and Song will be the driving force that either makes me love this series or cause it to be an ish sort of series. But so far a thumbs up, the characters, the names of everything and everyone, good beginning so far.

Sidelights

To celebrate the release of Venom and Song, the authors are having a contest to stir up excitement about it, with really cool prizes as well. You check out the Tribe Building Contest here: http://enterthedoorwithin.blogspot.com/2010/05/tribe-building-contest-begins-now.html Really sweet contest in my opinion! I've joined (I mean this is the book that book that determines with or not I stick with Kiri and Char-Mer-Charrick! =D ) and I'm part of Swiftstorm! Huzzah! If you want to join me and Swiftstorm email Seth, the tribe leader, at smr411(at)gmail(dot)com, otherwise you can join one of the other tribes located at heedtheprophecies.com, the website for the book series, just look and ask around and your sure to find a tribe that will take you! Like Swiftstorm! =D Leave a commit if you do, please, or locate me on the Underground, other wise I may fear that I'm talking to myself... =D

  1. Now that is a very fair review. Thanks for your honesty. You picked up on something Wayne and I fought the publisher on a lot...the length. We felt the book should have been much longer. Instead, it became a total set-up book. Venom and Song, accordingly, is a far better work (in my opinion), and really leaps further into the plot development as well as each of the 7. Hopefully everyone likes it better. Interestingly enough, VAS was SO long we pitched it as two books (well over 150,000 words...that's DOUBLE our 75,000 cap!). But it was eventually cut to around 120,000 (COTSK was 107,000). So I think everyone will be happy. Thanks for reading! Blessings! ch:

  2. Thanks for the comment! I love plot development, and COTSK didn't have enough to make me happy, sadly enough, but now it sounds like VAS will be absolutely lovely! ^_^ I am now really super eager about the next book! Thank you for telling me this! I'm diffidently happier now about the books!! =D
